STAR Teaching School Alliance Governors
Being a Governor at a STAR Alliance school automatically enters you into the wider family of STAR Alliance Governors, pooling knowledge and experience from governors across all Core and Associate schools. The mix of primary and secondary expertise within the Alliance is part of what makes us unique, and we are proud to extend this approach to the development of each STAR governing body.

Chair of Governors Network Meeting
The first network meeting of the 2016-17 academic year took place on 18th October, 7pm at Monk Fryston School.
Future meeting dates were agreed as:
24th Jan 2017; and
23rd May 2017
All meetings will commence at 7pm at Monk Fryston School.
Chairs (or their representatives) from all STAR Alliance schools are encouraged to attend. Please confirm attendance to:
Steering Group
The role of the Steering Group is fourfold;
- to provide strategic oversight of the Headteacher’s Group by a body with governor representation;
- to plan and monitor the finances of the STAR Learning Alliance;
- to look at the future direction of the Alliance, and;
- to provide support on governance and governor development.
The group meets at least once per term. Last year the group has been focussed on supporting and challenging the Headteacher’s Group in executing its Development Plan. It has also been responsible for developing and proposing a democratic, transparent and accountable model for its operation in the future.
The representatives on the Steering Group are representing their category, rather than their school. For example a Primary School Headteacher represents Primary Schools from a teaching perspective, rather than their own specific school. This is the same for governor representatives who represent governors collectively, recognising the fact that the Alliance does not in any way reduce the responsibility of individual governing bodies for the management of their schools.
Governor Forum
This annual event in the Spring Term takes place at one of the STAR Alliance schools and provides an opportunity for all governors to network and share ideas on best practice within governance. Topics covered at this forum in the past have included:
- GB benchmarking;
- Skills audit;
- NGA Membership as an Alliance;
- Chair of Governor Networking and Mentoring;
- 20 Questions Every Governing Body Should Ask Themselves;
- Opportunities for governor training within the Alliance;
- Strategic/Operational identification exercises.
The Forum is a successful method of evaluating actions taken by the Steering Group and providing a platform for all feedback on the development of the Alliance.
