Teaching Assistant Training & Networks 2017/18

Once again three TA Training & Network Meetings will be held in 2017/18 (see below for specific areas to be discussed at each one).

This Training Network is open to Teaching Assistants in any STAR Teaching School Alliance member school. Please confirm the names of anyone wishing to attend each session to BusinessManager@STARteachingschoolalliance.org

The Teaching Assistant as Scaffolder – maximising the impact of the Teaching Assistant

How do we improve the interactions we have with pupils through scaffolding? We will discuss scaffolding in detail and look at TA’s role in encouraging pupils to think of strategies they can use to solve the problems for themselves. How to support pupils to become more independent.

The session will also allow time to network, share best practice and discussion time.

Training will be delivered by Jo Brown-Bolton

2. Tuesday 6th February, 1:30 – 3:30pm, Venue to be confirmed

Supporting learning of a core subject

This session will focus on how Teaching Assistants can support learning in a core subject – either Maths or English – final details to follow at a later date.

Until finalised, you have a chance to influence which subject should be looked at by emailing your preference to BusinessManager@STARteachingschoolalliance.org

3. Monday 21st May between 1:30 – 3:30pm, venue to be confirmed

Running Records

A running record is a way to assess a student’s reading progress by systematically evaluating a student’s oral reading and identifying error patterns. This session will give clear guidelines of how to measure and calculate children’s strengths and weaknesses in reading text at the instructional (90 to 94% reading accuracy) level of reading.

The session will also allow time to network, share best practice and discussion time.

Training will be delivered by Jo Brown-Bolton

It was agreed at the Strategic Headteacher meeting that this network would be useful and that costs of any staff cover would be met by individual member schools.
