Details for Able Science Shared Curriculum Activity:
Year 5/6
Visiting schools MUST send an adult to support their pupils. IY to issue draft consent letters and risk assessments in the Autumn. Pupil places are invoiced at £30 per pupil per day. The same pupils should ideally attend autumn, spring and summer dates. Sessions start 9.15am and finish circa 3pm. If you would like to take up any of the spare sessions please contact IY asap. NB non-attendance at booked sessions will still be invoiced |

Helen Spring – science consultant and former Riverside employeeHelen Spring works as a Primary Science and Outdoor Learning Specialist in and around Yorkshire primarily. Helen worked in environmental education for a number of years, before re-training as a Primary School Teacher. During her 7 years teaching, Helen was passionate about Primary Science and Eco-Schools, leading her school to achieve awards in these areas. She left teaching to work at the National Science Learning Centre, before setting up as an independent specialist (www.springlearning.co.uk), as well as working as a hub leader for the Primary Science Quality Mark (www.psqm.org.uk). Helen is a Level 3 Forest School Leader and holds public liability insurance. Helen’s Science Days will vary depending on the year groups she is working with at the time. They will be relevant to the National Curriculum, but designed to extend more-able pupils. All workshops are practical and can be adapted according to your needs; Helen will ensure that all activities are appropriately risk-assessed. This workshop will be on FORCES:In this workshop, children will: • Use a lever to lift an adult • Explore levers using classroom equipment • Start to learn about mechanical advantage • Explore pulleys outdoors – lifting items such as a bucket of water • Compete in teams to see which group can lift the heaviest load using a pulley system • Explore gears using hoops and hand drills • Make your own cardboard gears
